Viewed from the sea, its shape was said to resemble a crane in flight, earning it the nickname “Maizuru Castle.” The castle once featured over 47 turrets, with Shiomi-yagura Turret serving as a key defensive structure on the northwest side. After the castle was decommissioned, Shiomi-yagura Turret—along with Hanami Yagura—was relocated in 1908 to Sofukuji Temple, the Kuroda family’s ancestral temple in Hakata Ward, where it was repurposed as a Buddhist hall. In 1990, the City of Fukuoka purchased the structure and began restoration research. The original construction methods of Shiomi-yagura Turret were revealed through this process, and it was restored using both preserved original materials and new wood where necessary. The reconstruction was completed in March 2025.

Fukuoka Castle Shiomi-yagura Turret (inside Maizuru Park)
Area: Tenjin
1-1 Ohorikoen, Chuo-ku, Fukuoka
Access: 3-minute walk from Ohorikoen Subway Sta.
Hours: 10:00~16:00 (Closed: Mon *If a holiday falls on Mon, the following weekday)
https://fukuokajyo.com/restored-shiomiyagura/
#History #Playground #Outdoor #Architecture

Watch a Real Fish Market Auction

Seafood from across western Japan, including catches landed at Hakata Port, passes through this wholesale market, with around 300 varieties handled over the course of a year.
