(Kyuden) will increase operations on coal-fired thermal power plants instead of relying on liquefied natural gas (LNG) in a move that could save ¥3 billion per inspection. Currently, it is necessary to conduct periodic inspections every two years for boilers and every four years for steam turbines at thermal power stations. However, in order to make up for the suspension of nuclear power plants after the Great East Japan Earthquake, the country has taken measures to extend the interval between inspections if certain criteria is met. Increasing the number of sensors and checkpoints at coal-fired power plants, along with the enforcement of independent inspections on weekends or at two-week periods will mean that Kyuden can extend the period between large-scale inspections to six year intervals. Source: Nikkei Shimbun, 10/7/2017

Photo: 九州電力

Disclaimer: Fukuoka Now posts summaries of Kyushu area related news for the benefit of those who cannot read Japanese.
