This is expected to have a negative impact on tourism in the area. The practice of <em>ukai<\/em> was cancelled last year after heavy rains hit the northern Kyushu area. People began catching <em>ayu<\/em> (sweetfish) on May 20 this year, but rising water levels and the flow of sediment in the river made it hard to ensure people&#8217;s safety. Torrential downpours also caused damage to three yakatabune boats along the river. Fishing will resume once the water level has gone down.
