If approved by city council, the code will change from the current IATA airport code FUK to FUN. City spokesperson Hiroshi Bento said \u201cFukuoka will be one of three cities in Kyushu to host Rugby World Cup matches this autumn attracting many more overseas visitors than usual. We believe the city can further improve its already very favorable image by changing its airport code to FUN. Mr. Bento continues, \u201cAfter all, who doesn&#8217;t want to go to somewhere that is FUN?\u201d Statistics support this theory. The number of foreign visitors to Fukuoka in 2018 reached 3,094,000, a 4% increase year-on-year and the first time the number has topped 3 million.
