According to a report by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, the proportion of prefectural assembly seats held by women in Kumamoto marked the lowest in Japan as of December 2020, falling 7.3% behind the average. Only Okinawa (14.6%) and Nagasaki (13.3%) surpassed the national average.
