On Jan. 16, Fukuoka Prefecture reported a record-largest daily count of 1,290 new COVID-19 infections. As of the day, the prefecture began considering all new patients as infected to the Omicron variant. At the same time, in response to the latest decisions of the national government, home observation periods for those who had close contacts with the new coronavirus patients were generally shortened from 14 days to 10 days.
