In order to prevent escalator accidents, a safety campaign was held at a subway station in Fukuoka City, urging users to stand and ride in two lines instead of walking up escalators. The campaign was launched on July 26 by more than 50 railroad operators and other organizations across Japan to encourage safe escalator use. The Fukuoka City Transportation Bureau started the campaign at Hakata Subway Station for five days. There have been 18 accidents on escalators on the Fukuoka City Subway between April last year and February this year. Data shows transportation efficiency is higher when people ride in two lines and stop. A simulation conducted by a company involved in the structural design of buildings reproduced two ways of riding escalators on a computer under certain assumptions: “stop left and walk right,” which is common in Fukuoka Prefecture, and “stop in two lines,” in which everyone stops and rides in two lines. The time required to transport 450 passengers was compared.
