Organized by Fukuoka City, the award, now in its 33rd year, honors individuals who have significantly contributed to academia, arts, and culture in Asia. The ceremony was attended by Prince Akishino and Princess Kiko.<\/p>\n<p>Thongchai Winichakul, an emeritus professor at the University of Wisconsin, was recognized for his impactful research on how the concepts of nations and states have been arbitrarily and intentionally created through map-making, using Thailand as a case study.
