In an innovative step toward carbon neutrality, a maritime company based in Moji District, Kitakyushu City, is launching “HANARIA,” a tour boat powered by electricity generated from hydrogen and biodiesel. This initiative, reported to the Governor of Kitakyushu by company executives, marks the first of its kind in Japan. Set to commence operations on April 10, HANARIA is equipped with sixteen hydrogen tanks, enabling it to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 53% compared to traditional fossil fuel-powered vessels of similar size. The 100-passenger boat will primarily operate between Kokura and Moji ports, offering night cruises through the Kanmon Straits and hosting corporate seminars. The Governor welcomed the use of hydrogen in maritime transport as a significant step toward expanding hydrogen demand and supply infrastructure in the region.
