The initiative responds to the presence of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world&#8217;s largest contract chipmaker, which has already inaugurated its first factory in Kikuyo town, Kumamoto Prefecture, and has announced plans for a second.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new department aims to cultivate advanced professionals skilled in semiconductor systems and information mathematics, capable of contributing both locally and internationally. The Master&#8217;s program will admit 120 students, while the Ph.D. program will have a capacity of 22 students. President Hisao Ogawa emphasized the strategic timing of the announcement to attract prospective students eager to seize emerging opportunities in this field.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The university plans to collaborate broadly with TSMC, Taiwanese universities, and other domestic and international entities, essentially creating a dedicated &#8220;Semiconductor Graduate School&#8221;. Applications will open this summer, with acceptance announcements expected by October.
