Volunteers and members of the Murokawa Shiro-uo Association installed &#8220;yana&#8221; traps in mid-February to monitor fish stocks. On February 25, the first catch yielded 88 fish, a modest start, but fishermen expect numbers to increase. Shiro-uo, a translucent goby species about 5 cm long, ascends rivers to spawn from late February to early April.
