So far in 2024, a total of 654 cases have been reported, significantly exceeding the 396 cases recorded during the same period in 2019, the highest year since current tracking began in 2018. The bacterial infection, marked by severe coughing, primarily affects children and spreads through droplets or contact with contaminated surfaces. With increased travel and contact expected during the Golden Week holidays, the prefecture is urging basic infection control such as handwashing, mask use, and cough etiquette.
