The initiative, backed by a ¥6.4 billion budget for the current fiscal year, is part of the city’s broader strategy to create a more attractive, nature-integrated urban environment. City Hall’s east and west walls and balconies up to the 14th floor will be greened to create visual continuity with nearby landmarks like ACROS Fukuoka and Tenjin Central Park. Subway greening will begin at Hakata, Tenjin, and Fukuoka Airport stations—each used by over 200,000 passengers daily.

LED lighting will support plant growth in the underground environment. At Hakata Station on the Nanakuma Line, the design will incorporate native forest flora and features like flowing water and ambient sounds to create a sensory nature experience. Mayor Soichiro Takashima emphasized that incorporating greenery into the evolving cityscape will not only benefit residents but also enhance the experience for tourists. Construction is scheduled to finish by March 2026 for City Hall and February 2026 for the subway stations. Source: Fukuoka City

Stay informed with the latest Fukuoka & Kyushu news and events in English.
