The initiative, aimed at supporting families amid rising living costs, covers the second and third terms of the academic year and eliminates monthly lunch fees of approximately ¥4,200 for elementary and ¥5,000 for junior high students. The city allocated ¥3.2 billion for the program. Parents expressed relief at the reduced financial burden. Students with allergies who bring their own meals will receive equivalent cash benefits, while those with partial dietary restrictions, religious exemptions, or school absences are not eligible. Fourteen other municipalities in Fukuoka Prefecture have also adopted lunch subsidies, though financial challenges have limited wider implementation. Source: NHK

Stay informed with the latest Fukuoka & Kyushu news and events in English.
