The system places a non-licensed crew member at the front for safety checks and emergency stops while trains operate automatically. Beginning in December, JR Kyushu will introduce driver-on-board automatic operation between Mojik\u014d and Kokura and between Kokura and Usa, ahead of a shift to full automation. The company will invest about \u00a53 billion, aiming to improve safety and address staff shortages.
