The building originated as the former Iwataya main store, which opened in 1936 and long served as a landmark in central Tenjin. After Iwataya relocated, the structure underwent seismic reinforcement and reopened as Fukuoka PARCO in March 2010. The closure aligns with the city-led \u201cTenjin Big Bang\u201d project, which will redevelop the area together with the neighboring Shintencho shopping arcade. Plans include a large mixed-use complex featuring a high-end hotel, offices, a live music venue, a museum, and a redesigned shopping street reflecting Shintencho\u2019s character. PARCO said no temporary store will open during construction, and future re-entry remains undecided.
