The facility currently produces about 30,000 tons of fresh water daily from seawater, but equipment upgrades now allow output to rise to approximately 40,000 tons. The additional volume equals the daily water consumption of around 50,000 residents. The expansion comes as reservoir levels in six dams in the Chikugo River system\u2014an important water source for the Fukuoka metropolitan area\u2014have continued to decline following months of low rainfall. As of March 12, storage levels had dropped to 11.9%, prompting a 55% intake restriction from the river system.
