Coffee grounds from two local Starbucks stores will be collected and combined with shochu production residue to fuel boilers and generate power. The initiative also includes efforts to cut carbon dioxide emissions and promote environmental education. Kirishima Shuzo already operates facilities that produce biogas from distillation byproducts for energy use and electricity sales. The Starbucks stores generate about 20 kilograms of coffee waste daily, which had been discarded. Officials said the partnership aims to expand local sustainability efforts and improve resource efficiency through collaboration. Source: Nikkei / Starbucks Coffee Japan

Photo: Fukuoka Now (For image purposes only)

Stay informed with the latest Fukuoka & Kyushu news and events in English.
