According to Munakata Taisha Shrine and related organizations, analysis of 21 fragments revealed gilded copper plates from the Kofun period. Investigators found that the decorative patterns matched those of the National Treasure known as the “Gilt Bronze Armor,” indicating the pieces were once part of the same object. The armor closely resembles examples excavated from the Daisen Kofun in Osaka, traditionally associated with Emperor Nintoku. Researchers said the findings provide further evidence of the importance of state rituals conducted on Okinoshima during the period. The artifacts will go on public display from July 15. Source: KBC News / TNC News

Photo: TNC News

Get Fukuoka and Kyushu’s top stories delivered to your inbox.
