The 45-year-old venue hosts the annual Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament as well as conventions and concerts. City officials say aging facilities, limited accessibility and a loading entrance too low for large trucks cannot be fully addressed through renovation alone. The city is also considering the future relocation or rebuilding of the neighboring Fukuoka Sunpalace.
