Hakata Traditional Craft Center Opened
\n<\/strong>A new facility devoted to Fukuoka\u2019s traditional crafts opened in Kamikawabata-machi, Hakata-ku on Apr. 7, 2011 in a two-storied wooden building which previously served as a community center for 34 years. On the first floor there is an exhibition space and a cafe. Occasionally workshops and lectures are held. On the second floor there are approximately 80 works on permanent display including those of Kisaburo Ogawa (Hakata Ori), and late Yoichi Kojima (Hakata doll). Other traditional local crafts such as Hakata-basami (Hakata scissors), Hakata Magemono (containers made of carefully bent wood), Hakata tops, and Hakata Hariko (paper doll). Leaflets and videos explaining the history and making of processes for all of these crafts are available in English, Korean, and Chinese.<\/p>\n

Hakata Port International Terminal Renovated!<\/strong>
\nMany aesthetic and functional improvements were completed recently at the Hakata Port International Terminal. A new escalator and elevator were installed to help passengers board the New Camellia ferry and the Beetle and Kobee hydrofoils which link Fukuoka to Busan. The interior received some modifications including the use of Hakata Ori (textile) and Hakata-bei (walls made of earth and old roof tiles) so visitors can obtain a feel for the city\u2019s history and culture. Figuring out how to board buses and pay has been a challenge for visitors. Now tourist and traffic information for Fukuoka and Kyushu will be available through newly installed digital signage systems.<\/p>\n

Camp at Mt. Abura Civic Forest<\/strong>
\nThe Mt. Abura Civic Forest is located about 9km from the center of Fukuoka City. Mt. Abura\u2019s peak is 597 meters high and 70.7 hectares area features an athletic field, 15 bungalows, camping space for 25 tents. Reservations for the summer season begin on Jun. 1 and the season runs from Jul. 20 ~ Aug. 30. Additional fees are required for bungalows and tents. Call or visit after 9:00, Jun. 1 to make reservations (Jun. 1: phone only). Capacity per day is limited to around 200 so hurry! Campfires are possible with advance permission. Fukuoka FC Supported Film Showing<\/strong>
\nThe Fukuoka Film Commission (Fukuoka FC) is a joint public and private organization established in 2003 and consists of 17 municipalities including Fukuoka City and the chamber of commerce. It supports and facilitates the on-location shooting of movies, dramas, and television commercials. A new film Kiseki (Miracle) directed by Hirokazu Koreeda will be open on theater screens on Jun. 4 (Sat.) in Kyushu. In this story children make a wish for a \u201cmiracle\u201d that is said to occur on the day of the opening of Kyushu Shinkansen. It was shot at Momochi Elementary School, Gintencho (Zasshonokuma), Hakata Station, and in Ohori and Maizuru Park. You will be able to recognize many familiar sites throughout the film.<\/p>\n

Environment Cleanup Event<\/strong>
\nThe Love Earth Clean Up 2011 event will be held on Jun. 12 (Sun.) from 9:00. It\u2019s the 20th anniversary for this popular event. Citizens, companies and municipalities clean beaches, rivers and parks together. About 36,000 volunteers attended last year in Fukuoka City. Venues include: Obaru Beach, Nakagawa Riv. (Seiryu Park), Fukuhama Beach, Nishi Park, Ohori and Maizuru Park, Momochihama, Ikinomatsubara Beach, Futamigaura, Nokonoshima, and others. The event has spread to Busan, Korea! Reservations are not required. Go directly to a venue with your work gloves. The event is held in light rain but cancelled in heavy rain.<\/p>\n

Hakata Port Tower \u2013 Hakata Port\u2019s Symbol<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n<\/strong>Standing 100 meters high the Hakata Port Tower was built in 1964. The free observation deck look-out offers excellent views of ships entering and leaving the port as well as a sparkling view of the city\u2019s skyline at night. Hakata Port Bayside Museum on the first floor is also free.<\/p>\n
