On Jan. 19 the lawyer of a 20 year old Fukuoka man filed a complaint with the Fukuoka District court claiming that the refusal of his client\u2019s application to Fukuoka Women\u2019s University, a public university in Higashi Ward, was unconstitutional on the grounds of gender discrimination. The man is demanding that his application be reinstated and is requesting \u00a5660,000 in damages. In November 2014, the man submitted his application for spring 2015 admission to the Department of Food and Health Sciences, but it was revoked because one of the university\u2019s requirements is that applicants must be female. In a statement, the man said, \u201cThe university is a public institution supported by taxes. If my application is refused, I will be forced to attend another university outside of the prefecture or a private school.\u201d An official from Fukuoka Women\u2019s University refused to comment because the university had not received the complaint yet.
