When Paul visited the Tachiarai Peace Memorial Museum in Chikuzen Town several years ago, he saw a Japanese flag on display that reminded him of the one in his grandfather’s home. When he contacted his grandfather, who is now 89, he said he would like to return the flag to its rightful owner. Two years ago he requested the help of the museum in locating the owner, and with the assistance of an NPO in Saga Prefecture, the flag eventually was traced back to Tokujiro Ogura, a soldier from Shiga Prefecture. Mr. Ogura passed away in 2000, but arrangements were made to return the flag to his wide Fumi, now 84, on Apr. 21. She said receiving the flag was like having her husband come back. “If only I knew earlier, I could’ve returned the flag while Mr. Ogura was still alive, but I am glad I was able to return it,” said Paul.
