The Fisheries Research Agency announced that it has completed an experimental tank for spawning bluefin tuna on land at its Nagasaki-based Seikai National Fisheries Research Institute. Juvenile fish will be placed in the tank this month, and they are expected to begin spawning in two years. This is the first terrestrial spawning facility in the world. The aim is to develop technologies for the complete aquaculture of bluefin tuna from egg to adult fish. As of late 2012, there are 14 prefectures, including Kagoshima and Nagasaki, where bluefin tuna aquaculture is conducted in marine fishponds, but the natural environment can heavily influence spawning, and operators in some regions end up collecting no eggs in some years. The new facility is consists of two concrete tanks measuring 20m in diameter and 6 m deep.
