The gate is designed in the image of Hakata in the Middle Ages, when the city flourished as a center for trade. The name Tsujinodoguchi, has been used since the Middle Ages as the gate connecting Dazaifu to Hakata. The name Hakatasennen, suggested by a 67 year old local resident, reflects the 1,000 years of history of Hakata.
