So as soon as we heard rumors of a tomato <em>ramen<\/em>, we couldn\u2019t rest until we\u2019d tried some. Venturing out that very lunchtime, we headed to 333.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fukuoka-now.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/tomato-ramen-mar-feat-crop-e1457073215281.jpeg?resize=640%2C487&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"tomato ramen mar feat crop\" width=\"640\" height=\"487\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-71031\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As one might expect of a restaurant nestled in the achingly hip backstreets of Daimyo, the interior kept it quirky: reds and purples with the occasional glittering samurai chilli and showgirl tomato hanging next to the tables. We made our orders at the vending machine, and then settled down to discuss what we thought this bowl of wonderful weirdness would be like. Would we soon be supping a bowl of watered-down tomato soup? Or something more akin to a failed pasta al pomodoro? Would it just taste like someone had dumped ketchup into a bowl of <em>ramen<\/em>? <\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fukuoka-now.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/tomato-ramen-mar-2016-004-e1457072510129.jpg?resize=640%2C853&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"tomato ramen mar 2016 004\" width=\"640\" height=\"853\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-71020\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fukuoka-now.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/tomato-ramen-mar-2016-003-e1457072498101.jpg?resize=640%2C853&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"tomato ramen mar 2016 003\" width=\"640\" height=\"853\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-71019\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Needless to say we were expecting novelty, but not necessarily a tasty bowl of <em>ramen<\/em>. When the tomato <em>ramen<\/em> arrived &#8211; a vibrant red broth topped with celery and some freshly chopped tomato &#8211; we surreptitiously took our first sips: our original fears fell away &#8211; it was delicious! The tomato broth was rich and flavorsome (the tomatoes\u2019 origin is apparently a trade secret), with springy noodles as well as surprise slithers of delicious pork (well, a surprise inasmuch as they can\u2019t be seen on first glance through the near-opaque broth).  <\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fukuoka-now.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/tomato-ramen-mar-2016-010-e1457072581971.jpg?resize=640%2C480&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"tomato ramen mar 2016 010\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-71026\" \/><\/p>\n<p>333 also prides itself on its <em>karamen<\/em> (spicy <em>ramen<\/em>); when a customer claimed he found their most spicy <em>ramen<\/em> not at all spicy, they whipped up a new level of heat (the name of this <em>karamen<\/em> translates as &#8220;The New World&#8221;) using different, hotter peppers &#8211; try it, if you dare! The members of our group who ordered <em>karamen<\/em> decided to play it safe, some going for \u201czero heat\u201d and still finding their eyes watering, and one trying \u201clow heat\u201d and subsequently struggling not to dilute the broth with her own spice-induced tears. Despite the battle with the peppers for supremacy, the <em>karamen<\/em> was pronounced generally delicious, the wisp-like editions of egg making for a pleasantly earthy contrast to the spice. <\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fukuoka-now.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/tomato-ramen-mar-2016-007-e1457072538888.jpg?resize=640%2C480&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"tomato ramen mar 2016 007\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-71023\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fukuoka-now.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/tomato-ramen-mar-2016-002-e1457072486842.jpg?resize=640%2C853&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"tomato ramen mar 2016 002\" width=\"640\" height=\"853\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-71018\" \/><\/p>\n<p>333 gets busy at night (when they also have a side menu available) but is relatively quiet at lunchtime, making it a great place to grab a quick and unusual lunch!
