This 400m long street connects the Hakata-za Theater and Hakata Riverain to the north and Canal City to the south. In recent years, the street is booming with 12,000 visitors every weekday, and 25,000 on weekends. The arcade contains around 125 stores \u00ad\u00ad\u2013 everything from shops selling Buddhist altars and traditional fabrics to hamburger and noodle restaurants.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16624\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fukuoka-now.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/fn159-kawabata-main1.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16624\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16624\" title=\"fn159 kawabata main\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fukuoka-now.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/fn159-kawabata-main1.jpg?resize=640%2C480\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fukuoka-now.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/fn159-kawabata-main1.jpg?w=640&amp;ssl=1 640w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fukuoka-now.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/fn159-kawabata-main1.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16624\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kawabata shopping arcade (shotengai) is literally the center of this area. A wide variety of shops, both old and new, line the 400m-long street.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Head east from the arcade and you will come to Reizen Park. More than just a nice place for a stroll, it is also a popular spot for cherry blossom viewing in late March\/early April. The mask in this photo is called Niwaka-men and is unique to Hakata.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Another notable landmark is the 50-year-old Reizensou building that stands in a back alley between Reizen Park and the shopping arcade. From the outside it may appear to be just another boring concrete building, but step inside and you\u2019ll find an array of hidden delights including a photo studio, a bagel shop, a Korean restaurant and Japanese food stalls. To the south of Reizen Park is Kushida Shrine, affectionately nicknamed \u201cOkushida-san\u201d. Festival floats are displayed in the grounds all year round, as is a famous \u201clifting stone\u201d with which legendary sumo champions such as Futabayama and Asashoryu have tested their strength.
