Food Expo Kyushu aims to introduce locals and visitors to all the delights this island has to offer, making the most of the sunny (but not stuffy) autumn weather. Fukuoka Now went to check it out on its opening day (Oct. 9).<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fukuoka-now.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/kyushu-food-expo-oct-2015-001-e1444393368847.jpg?resize=640%2C480\" alt=\"kyushu food expo oct 2015 001\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-66683\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Food Expo Kyushu is a huge event spread over four days; over 80 stalls have been set up, all offering a different delicacy. It\u2019s a little bit overwhelming at first, since there are just so many options (and so many enthusiastic salespeople calling to you), so we recommend taking an initial lap to scout out the lay of the land. <\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fukuoka-now.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/kyushu-food-expo-oct-2015-011-e1444393510164.jpg?resize=640%2C480\" alt=\"kyushu food expo oct 2015 011\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-66693\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fukuoka-now.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/kyushu-food-expo-oct-2015-006-e1444393439159.jpg?resize=640%2C480\" alt=\"kyushu food expo oct 2015 006\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-66688\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once we\u2019d taken a little time to explore, we settled on our first dish: the <em>Motsunabe Korokke<\/em>. We\u2019d tried <em>motsunabe<\/em>, we\u2019d tried <em>korokke<\/em>, but we\u2019d never even heard of <em>Motsunabe Korokke<\/em>. This unusual snack was crunchy on the outside, but surprisingly gooey on the inside (\u00a5250). <\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fukuoka-now.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/kyushu-food-expo-oct-2015-012-e1444393525799.jpg?resize=640%2C853\" alt=\"kyushu food expo oct 2015 012\" width=\"640\" height=\"853\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-66694\"\/><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fukuoka-now.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/kyushu-food-expo-oct-2015-013-e1444393537200.jpg?resize=640%2C480\" alt=\"kyushu food expo oct 2015 013\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-66695\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We also enjoyed the <em>kakuniman<\/em> from Kakuniya Kojima (Nagasaki-based): tender braised pork belly wrapped in a slightly sweet, fluffy bun (\u00a5350). This is a seriously more-ish snack! <\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fukuoka-now.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/kyushu-food-expo-oct-2015-019-e1444393619416.jpg?resize=640%2C480\" alt=\"kyushu food expo oct 2015 019\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-66701\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fukuoka-now.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/kyushu-food-expo-oct-2015-021-e1444393656768.jpg?resize=640%2C480\" alt=\"kyushu food expo oct 2015 021\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-66703\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For dessert, we couldn\u2019t help but sample one of the purr-fect cat-shaped <em>dorayaki<\/em>. Tamaan, based in Yakuin, Fukuoka, is selling a particularly delicious chestnut <em>dorayaki<\/em> at this year&#8217;s Food Expo Kyushu; it is made using Fukuokan flour and whipped cream from Kyushu (\u00a5390). It was simply ears and whiskers above any other <em>dorayaki<\/em> we\u2019ve tasted. Paw-sitively delicious. Un-fur-gettable. (We\u2019ll stop now\u2026) <\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fukuoka-now.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/kyushu-food-expo-oct-2015-024-e1444393720609.jpg?resize=640%2C480\" alt=\"kyushu food expo oct 2015 024\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-66706\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fukuoka-now.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/kyushu-food-expo-oct-2015-004-e1444393411552.jpg?resize=640%2C853\" alt=\"kyushu food expo oct 2015 004\" width=\"640\" height=\"853\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-66686\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Local Sake Bar Kyushu offers an almost intimidatingly wide array of locally made alcohols. We sampled the <em>Fuwatoro<\/em> Pineapple, a shot of <em>sake<\/em> mixed with pineapple juice and served in a stylish shot glass (\u00a5300). It was sweet, delicious and refreshing after all the deliciously fatty meats we\u2019d just consumed. <\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fukuoka-now.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/kyushu-food-expo-oct-2015-014-e1444393553890.jpg?resize=640%2C480\" alt=\"kyushu food expo oct 2015 014\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-66696\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fukuoka-now.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/kyushu-food-expo-oct-2015-016-e1444393575256.jpg?resize=640%2C480\" alt=\"kyushu food expo oct 2015 016\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-66698\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s very pleasant to sit on one of the chairs provided on the park\u2019s grass, as the leaves on the trees are just beginning to turn red, making for a beautiful backdrop to your lunch or dinner (particularly with the elegant ACROS Building rising in the background). In case the view and tasty treats combined aren\u2019t enough to keep you satisfied, the organisers have also erected a small stage, where a variety of entertainers will be performing.
