But wait &#8211; don\u2019t just chuck them in the trash, your neighbours might give you a disapproving look! Festive decorations should be burned at <em>dondoyaki<\/em>; a customary New Year\u2019s event usually held in mid January. People bring together last year\u2019s good luck charms and New Year\u2019s decorations, and burn them in a bonfire at a shrine or local park to wish for good health and success for the year.
