That\u2019s why I was pleased to learn that my kids\u2019 school, Kusagae Elementary School (Kusagae, Chuo-ku), has its own superhero: Grass-Sider. I met with Grass-Sider and his interlocutor, Oyaji-Gumi (Dad\u2019s Club) chairman Nagai-san, to learn a little more about this mysterious green hero.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fukuoka-now.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/487905_140748579419071_1222252146_n.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fukuoka-now.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/487905_140748579419071_1222252146_n-e1368071741226.jpg?resize=640%2C480\" alt=\"\" title=\"487905_140748579419071_1222252146_n\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-36665\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><strong>Joel Dechant:   Grass-Sider, thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to meet with me.<\/strong><\/strong><br \/>\nGrass-Sider:    \u2026<br \/>\nNagai:\tActually, Grass-Sider doesn\u2019t talk, but I think we can make an exception for this interview.<br \/>\n<strong><strong>JD:     \tThanks. My kids told me he doesn\u2019t talk.<\/strong> Can you tell us what the name \u201cGrass-Sider\u201d means?<\/strong><br \/>\nGS:    \tFirst of all, \u201cGrass\u201d is from kusa in Kusagae. \u201cSider\u201d comes from the fact that the school is located on a riverside.<br \/>\n<strong>JD:     \tGrass-Sider, when did you start your superhero work?<\/strong><br \/>\nGS:    \tGrass-Sider arose spontaneously in October 2012, but the idea for a school hero had been floating around for about five years.<br \/>\n<strong>JD:     \tWhat is your mission?<\/strong><br \/>\nGS:    \tTo make children smile.<br \/>\n<strong>JD:     \tWhat kind of duties do you perform?<\/strong><br \/>\nGS:    \tI make appearances at school events, like graduation and entrance ceremonies, and serve as a crossing guard on the first of every month.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fukuoka-now.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/575444_164266580400604_345040070_n.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fukuoka-now.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/575444_164266580400604_345040070_n-e1368071786125.jpg?resize=640%2C480\" alt=\"\" title=\"575444_164266580400604_345040070_n\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-36666\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>JD:     \tWhere do you perform your duties?<\/strong><br \/>\nGS:    \tI only work within the Kusagae School District. In fact, I lose power if I leave the area, so you\u2019ll only find me at the elementary school and the local nursery schools.<br \/>\n<strong>JD:     \tDo you have any special powers?<\/strong><br \/>\nGS:    \tI am working on something I call the Grass Relax Beam. I also have a special pose. If you look closely, the design on my gloves is a child\u2019s smile, and my belt is a handshake.<br \/>\n<strong>JD:     \tWhere do you get your powers?<\/strong><br \/>\nGS:    \tFrom the kids and the community.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fukuoka-now.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/482558_146975148796414_636117333_n.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fukuoka-now.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/482558_146975148796414_636117333_n-e1368071810310.jpg?resize=639%2C853\" alt=\"\" title=\"482558_146975148796414_636117333_n\" width=\"639\" height=\"853\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-36667\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>JD:     \tWho are your enemies?<\/strong><br \/>\nGS:    \tI never fight in front of the children, but I have one enemy, Skullman from the Mad Empire. His only appearance was at an adults\u2019 gathering, though.<br \/>\n<strong>JD:     \tWe\u2019ve never seen Grass-Sider in a manga. Why?<\/strong><br \/>\nGS:    \tAs I said, I arose spontaneously. But I am thinking of starting a YouTube channel.<br \/>\n<strong>JD:     \tAre you married, or do you have a girlfriend?<\/strong><br \/>\nGS:    \tNo comment.<br \/>\n<strong>JD:     \tWhat\u2019s your favorite food?<\/strong><br \/>\nGS:    \tI am not a picky eater, but I have to make sure I can fit in my superhero suit.<br \/>\n<strong>JD:     \tYou\u2019ve gained a lot of media attention lately. Is it hard to be a superhero in Fukuoka?<\/strong><br \/>\nGS:    \tNot really because I only work in the Kusagae School District. I am not gunning for the big time like Kumamon. I really just want all of the people in the school district to be happy. It would be nice to see more school district superheroes in the future.<br \/>\n<strong>JD:     \tWhat kind of support does the school give you?<\/strong><br \/>\nGS:    \tThe school approves of Grass-Sider 100%. In fact, Principal Ogusu used to be a stuntman for Japan Action Club.
