<\/a><\/p>\nWe met this month\u2019s energetic guest Alice, from the Philippines, in the bright and stylish ELLE Caf\u00e9. Alice herself is no stranger to food- she opened her own Filipino restaurant \u201cDelgados\u201d in Yakuin, 2002. She tells us, “Many Japanese people think Filipino cuisine is spicy, but that’s a misunderstanding. We use lots of vegetables, with coconut milk and fish sauce. It’s quite mild, really.”<\/p>\n
As there aren\u2019t many Filipino restaurants in Fukuoka, Delgados has become a hub within the Filipino community. Alice explains how the Phillipines\u2019 high unemployment forces young people to go abroad to find jobs after graduating university. Moving far from their friends and families can be stressful, which is why Alice tries to support other members of the Fillipino community in Fukuoka.<\/p>\n
So much so, that many have come to think of Alice as an motherly figure in Fukuoka. People love visiting Alice\u2019s restaurant because she\u2019s always happy to chat and help them out. Alice remembers the help that she received when she was setting up her life in Japan – from both foreign and Japanese people – and now she strives to help others similarly.<\/p>\n Soon, Delgados will also celebrate its 10th anniversary.
