{"id":86242,"date":"2016-04-21T13:36:27","date_gmt":"2016-04-21T04:36:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fukuoka-now.com\/?p=86242&#038;lang=en"},"modified":"2016-04-21T15:19:19","modified_gmt":"2016-04-21T06:19:19","slug":"secret-witches-exhibition-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fukuoka-now.com\/en\/secret-witches-exhibition-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Secret Witches Exhibition Report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For the next month, Fukuoka City Museum is playing host to the travelling \u201cSecret Witches Exhibition,\u201d which is continuing its tour of Japan.<\/p>\n<p>This exciting and extremely well-presented exhibition is based on the \u201cWitches \u2013 Myth and Reality\u201d exhibition organised by Historisches Museum der Pfalz Speyer in 2009 and which was a huge success in Germany.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-86252\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fukuoka-now.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/witches-ft-img-e1461213361885.jpg?resize=640%2C480\" alt=\"witches ft img\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For the first time in Japan, you can read about the \u201cfact and fiction\u201d surrounding witches in this interactive and engaging exploration of these supposedly magical women.<br \/>\nFrom the early days of European witches and the subsequent witch hunts, to the more charming portrayal of the modern witch, this exhibition has it covered.<\/p>\n<p>The foyer of the museum offers a taste of what\u2019s in store, as a night-time backdrop, witches\u2019 robes and hats as well as a floor-mounted broom provide a great photo opportunity for visitors!<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-86243\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fukuoka-now.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/photobooth.jpg?resize=640%2C427\" alt=\"photobooth\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fukuoka-now.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/photobooth.jpg?w=640&amp;ssl=1 640w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.fukuoka-now.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/photobooth.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On approach to the exhibition itself, which is on display until 29th May, the dim lighting and staff (all of whom don witches hats) set the tone of this mysterious, eerie exhibition.<br \/>\nEntering through large, mock-wooden castle-like gates, you catch your first glimpse of the plethora of artefacts which are on loan from Germany, Austria, France and Lichtenstein. The interior of the exhibition has you thinking you\u2019ve entered some sort of old castle, with cobweb-covered bookshelves in every corner.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition is divided into four \u201cchapters\u201d at the beginning of each of which is an English description of what is to follow. Chapter One begins with the origins of witches and their links to the devil, and features the beautiful \u2018Celestial Globe\u2019 amongst its artefacts.<\/p>\n<p>Chapter Two \u2013 \u201cDelusion\u201d \u2013 informs visitors of the changing perception of witches in the 16th to 18th centuries, during which time they came to be a source of hatred. Foto:Markus Guschlbauer<\/p><\/div>\n<p>From there, you emerge into an even darker section of the exhibition, where cobwebbed-candles hang from the ceiling. This part, entitled \u201cTrials\u201d, showcases the range of equipment used to torture supposed witches into making a confession.
