Fukuoka Fireworks Guide 2019

Summer in Japan isn’t complete without experiencing at least one hanabi taikai (fireworks festival)! Fireworks (花火, hanabi) have long been an integral part of Japanese summers. Originally held to ward off evil spirits, there are now hundreds of fireworks festivals across Japan no matter the season, enjoyed mostly for the illuminations and dramatic sounds. It’s also a great opportunity to wear Japanese summer fashion such as yukata or jinbei while watching the fireworks or sampling delicious festival food and drinks at the bustling stalls. To help you enjoy the festivities, we’ve compiled a list of 19 upcoming fireworks displays in and near Fukuoka below!

• Arrive early to secure a spot with a good vantage point – it’s a great chance to relax before the area gets crowded too.
• Travel light – don’t bring big, bulky bags or belongings that will get in the way when maneuvering through crowds.
• Like any Japanese festival, there are a lot of food and drinks stalls selling delicious matsuri food! Come with an empty stomach and enjoy the treats on offer.
