Itoshima Now! September 2018

This month we introduce you to a recently opened udon restaurant located close to Shiraito Falls. The udon is special, but it’s really the locally grown organic vegetables that are the stars. As you turn into the restaurant, you’ll pass by a new landmark with a fabulous view of Itoshima. Read the backstory of this place here, too. Then we draw your attention to a new shop inside JR Chikuzen-Maebaru Station where you can buy Itoshima souvenirs and help the less fortunate at the same time. Finally, there’s a new mobile food truck making waves. Read about Tsushima Burger Kiyo here, too.

Shiraito Udon Yasuji

Located just before the turnoff to Shiraito Falls, one of Itoshima’s most popular attractions, Yasushi Maeda’s family and staff grow 100% organic vegetables. Last month they opened an udon restaurant to showcase these veggies. With the mission of popularizing organic vegetables “that taste like vegetables did before”, Maeda will soon run workshops for professional cooks (and children), open a cake shop, a vegetable canning business, and a guest house where people (including foreigners) can learn about organic farming in Itoshima. In the meantime, drop by for their delicious Sanuki-style udon with veggies.

Products include locally grown cinnamon tea, somen chiri set (a local Itoshima noodle dish), local red grain rice and the popular Itogon (local mascot) shaped cookies. Tsushima Burger Kiyo

With two shops in Tsushima and two in Korea, Tsushima Burger Kiyo has rolled out a food truck in Itoshima to sell their popular Tsushima burgers. With hijiki (seaweed) mixed into the pork and beef patties, coated in a rich sauce with a sprinkling of grilled squid, the Tsushima Burger (¥600) is a new kind of surf ’n’ turf! It’s parked in front of the Blue Roof Itoshima (5457 Shima-sakurai, Itoshima City) or Tabi Cafe (21-4 Shima-kuga, Itoshima City).

Seven Seats of Itoshima

Wood sculptor Yuichi Komoda (moqu c0mo) has carved out a new landmark in Itoshima. Resembling North American totem poles, each pole of locally sourced Japanese cedar is named after one of the seven mountains and peaks in Itoshima, and each is dedicated to a god. Located near the turnoff to Shiraito Falls.
