About This Year’s Isla de Salsa
The Isla de Salsa festival has become the biggest Latin music festival in Japan and will celebrate its 15th anniversary this year. On this occasion, Isla will have a slightly different flavor with the motto “Latin Culture meets Japan”. Nationally recognized Japanese bands of various musical genres will show us their musical and cultural richness and will share the stage with Latin artists. Through this form of solidarity and union between all the participants, we hope to convey energy and encouragement, trusting in Japan’s strength to overcome the difficulties caused by the earthquake.
HEADLINING BANDS
Calle Real
For the first time, a salsa orchestra beyond the frontiers of any Latin country has been chosen as the headliner band of the festival. The group Calle Real will present timba music of the 21st century — made in Sweden! Many members of the band have lived in Cuba and studied music, but none is Cuban by birth. Reflecting the highly integrated multicultural society in Sweden, the twelve band members are Swedish, but with roots in various countries such as Chile, Poland and Cuba. Its percusionist, Rickard Valdés, is the son of the 5-time Grammy winner Bebo Valdés and the brother of 8-time Grammy winner Chucho Valdés. The band sets out to create a new style of music, one that contains all the ingredients and musical influences of its preference. Pre-nominated for a Grammy for their first record (Con Fuerza); Record of the Year in France (Con Fuerza); Record revelation in France (Con Fuerza); Invited to play at the most important music festival in Cuba (Festival Benny More).
Soffet – Swing Rap
SOFFet is a rap duo that combines rap and singing in a very original way. They are in great demand at jazz, rock, and hip hop festivals for their high quality musicianship.
Brown Sugar – Dance Hall Reggae
The “toughest & sexist female duo” in Japan.
Their live performance is mainly dance hall reggae with a singjay (singer/deejay) style, a Jamaican style of reggae combining chanting and singing in an elastic scat format.
Sakishima – Okinawan Breeze
SAKISHIMA meeting is Simoji Isamu and Ara Yukito, an Okinawan music partnership. The Miyako-dialect singing of Simoji Isamu and Yaeyama folk standard-bearer Ara Yukito combine to create a fusion of great music sensibility.
