Comic Book Writer
As a young boy, Sean loved to read comics, and by the age of twelve he decided to become a comic book writer. Sean now lives in Kumamoto where he is currently working on his twelfth book. Thanks to the internet, Sean collaborates with artists from Japan and all around the globe. This month, a manga of Japanese ghost stories that he originally produced for print will be released as downloadable data for viewing on mobile phones and PCs. To those who think comics are just for kids, Sean likes to point out that comics are like movies; some are for children, and some are for adults. For Sean, these “graphic novels” are both an art form and a serious business. Some of the topics are serious too. His most recent book is titled: “Iraq: Operation Corporate Takeover”. 少年時代からコミック本を読むのが大好きだったショーンは、１２歳の時点で既に「将来は漫画家になる！」と決心した。熊本に住まいを構える彼は、12冊目となるコミックを現在執筆中だ。今やインターネットのお陰で、世界中のアーティストたちとコラボレートできるため、どこに住んでいようと彼の活動範囲は広い。今月には、もともと出版するつもりで描いた日本の幽霊に関する漫画「雪女」は、PCや携帯電話でダウンロードして読むこともできる。もはや彼のファンは世界中から彼の漫画を見ることができるのだ。まだ、漫画は子ども向けのものだと考えている残念な人に、ショーンから一言。「漫画は映画のように、子供向けのものもあれば大人向けのものもある。絵と文で視覚的に伝える『グラフィック小説』なんだ。もちろん芸術的な側面もあるけど、ビジネス的な側面も兼ね備えているよ。真面目な題材の漫画も多いって知ってる？」ちなみに彼の最新作はイラク戦争が題材。心理学と社会学を専攻した彼なりの切り口でのストーリーとイラストの組み合せが興味深い。子供の頃に読んで以来、漫画から遠ざかっている人も、大人になって読む漫画、そして英語で綴られる漫画で新たな境地が開けるかも！
