Back to Basics

For over seventeen years Horie-san has trained and worked in renowned French restaurants in Fukuoka, Tokyo and France. So why then is this accomplished chef serving solo in a tiny low-rent room on a small backstreet in Jonan-ku? Full control of the menu, hours, and prices are obvious reasons, but this retreat has also let him get back to basics, back to his original goal of cooking delicious food for appreciative customers. Horie’s French food is food as served in France, but not exclusively French, and includes other European dishes such as paella. There is a short printed menu, but almost everyone opts for the Chef’s Dinner at a mere 3,000 yen which includes five or six dishes, the quantity and even the selection of which is adjusted to the customers’ tastes and mood where possible. Up to nine customers can be seated overlooking the kitchen, and watching Horie effortlessly serve a stream of gorgeous plates one after another is half the fun of dining there. Wine also forms an integral part of the evening. Once again, let Horie-san recommend something; his wines complement his dishes and the bottles are reasonably priced, beginning at just 2,300 yen for the house wine. Highly recommended for a quiet evening of low-key sophistication and fine flavors.
