Phantom Fish and Nature School

Ahh, March! When the sun regains its power and the feeling in your limbs returns. After spending all winter under the kotatsu trying to figure out Japanese TV, you can finally go outside and enjoy the Kyushu countryside.
A must-see area is Mizukami-mura, a.k.a. Mizu no Ue no Gakko (Nature School). Located at the southeast tip of Kumamoto Prefecture near Miyazaki, it lies nestled in the mountains along the clear waters of the Kuma River.
The town is equipped to help visitors enjoy its many pleasures. Lovers of scaly creatures should already know its main attraction: yamame fishing, which opens March 1. The yamame (a kind of trout) is reputed as a clever fish worthy of any aficionado. With help from the locals, however, even novices should stand a chance.
Visit the Amenbokan in town first to get the latest information on fishing spots and strategies. You can even take one-hour lessons from an expert. Equipment and bait are available on location. Just make sure youユve got the footwear and clothing youユll need to stalk your slimy friend through the marshes of Mizukami. And if these so-called “phantom fish” elude you, fear not: you can buy them at the fish market.
Whether your clash with the yamame ends in triumph or tragedy, you can rest your weary bones at the Yuyama Onsen, featuring hot baths known for their skin-beatifying effect. The end of March also sees Mizukamiユs 30,000 sakura trees in full blossom. Mizukami-mura has whatever you need to chase away those last winter blues!
