AI Technology to Prevent Road Accidents

The Kyushu Institute of Technology announced on March 6 the development of a sensor-based system that immediately turns on an autonomous driving function in a car in case the driver falls asleep at the wheel. The system uses sensors attached to the rearview car mirror and the driver’s seat to detect the breathing, pulse, and posture of the driver. Artificial intelligence (AI) is then used to turn the vehicle into a self-driving car that pulls over to the side of the road. Scientists are currently carrying out experiments on the new device and expect it to be available for practical use within the next five to ten years. The devices can currently predict if a driver has dozed off with an accuracy of approximately 80%. Source: Yomiuri Shimbun, 3/7/2018
