Annual Ohori Fireworks Event to be Discontinued

Nishi Nippon Shimbun announced on September 14 that the Ohori Fireworks Festival will no longer take place due to safety concerns. The organizers spent time reviewing this year’s display before expressing their regret at the decision. A record high of 420 people worked as security guards and guides at the 2018 event. However, this was still not deemed enough to adequately support the 430,000 visitors who attended. Support staff reportedly found it hard to direct the crowds of people who suddenly moved to the venue after spending the build-up in air-conditioned buildings near the park. The festival started in 1949 as part of the country’s post-war reconstruction efforts. It has been held almost every year since that time, apart from a hiatus that lasted from 1967 to 1978.
