App for Unlicensed Taxis to be Tested in Goto

A new system to provide tourists with better transportation by local drivers will be tested in Hisaka Island, Goto City. According to an announcement by Goto Azit Inc., the company’s mobility platform app “Crew” will begin testing in April. An increasing number of tourists are visiting the island since the village was registered as a Hidden Christian Site in the Nagasaki Region, a UNESCO World Heritage site, in 2018. However, only five taxis and three rent-a-cars are currently available. While the operation of unlicensed taxis (“shirotaku”) are prohibited in Japan, this project will repay drivers with gratuity from users. Testing of this joint project among Azit, Goto City and Hisaka Taxi will run for one month. Source: Azit Inc., 2/5/2019
