Aso City Abandons Laputa Road Reconstruction

Aso City, Kumamoto Prefecture, is reportedly abandoning reconstruction efforts on Laputa no Michi (Laputa Road). Sometimes referred to as the Road to Heaven, the 5.8 km drive has been a popular sightseeing spot, known for its scenic and winding path, but was badly damaged by the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes. Restoration costs are estimated at approximately ¥10 billion, a burden that would be too expensive for the city even with the assistance of subsidies. Source: Kumamoto Nichinichi Shimbun, 8/23/2017
