The operating company of Canal City Hakata announced that the facility has welcomed an estimated 314.8 million visitors since it first opened its doors for business in April 1996. The number of visitors to the commercial facility during the 2017 fiscal year reached an all-time high. Over 17 million people used the complex, which represented a 3.9% increase compared to the previous year. The rise in low cost airlines flying into Fukuoka Airport and the popularity of Canal City’s exciting attractions, such as their night-time projection shows, are said to be factors behind this recent surge.
