Fukuoka Prefectural and City officials met on September 26 to discuss issues surrounding the creation of a tourist accommodation tax. The discussion follows the Fukuoka City Legislative Assembly’s decision to adopt the tax, which will be levied at guests staying at local hotels and ryokan. Staff from the prefecture were critical of the move. Their contention is that the city’s actions ignore the prefectural government’s efforts to establish a similar system. Double taxation could be a possibility if both sides proceed with their plans. The prefecture has asked the city to set-up a forum so that further discussions can take place.
