On Aug. 9, Fukuoka Airport began using facial recognition gates for Japanese passengers returning from overseas. When they pass through immigration, passengers swipe their passports through readers on the gates, which use built-in cameras to photograph them. The system then checks the photographs stored in passengers’ passport IC chips to confirm their identity. The whole screening process takes about 10 seconds, and there is almost no chance for error. This means officers who used to screen Japanese passengers can now screen foreign passengers, thereby shortening wait times. Source: fiba.jp
