Fukuoka City’s Plans For a Ropeway Left Hanging

A plan by Fukuoka City to build an urban ropeway between Hakata Station and the Port of Hakata might be on hold. The project, which was listed in Mayor Soichiro Takashima’s manifest, was expected to proceed when a pre-research fund of ¥50 million was included in the city’s budget for the fiscal year of 2019. However, a group of the eighteen assembly members who belong to the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) proposed the removal of the budget from the draft. The leader of the group Shigeru Nanbara said at a press conference that “a budget allocated to the research of the entire urban transportation can be discussed, but a budget solely set for the preparation of the ropeway cannot be accepted at this moment.” The proposal will be discussed at the assembly on Mar. 13.
