JR Kyushu and NTT Docomo’s joint project to develop a train window with electronic display technology is progressing. According to the president of JR Kyushu, Toshihiko Aoyagi, the two companies have partnered to manufacture a new type of train window where tourism information can be displayed according to the train’s location. The service will also interact with passengers’ smartphones and tablets and provide information such as local souvenirs and tourist attractions in multiple languages including English, Chinese and Korean. A test will start on JR Kyushu’s D&S (design and story) train Isaburo Shimpei between Kumamoto and Kagoshima prefectures in spring of 2019. The company aims to start the actual operation in 2020.
