Kyuden Supply LNG Fuel to Ships

On May 15, Kyushu Electric Power (Kyuden) and Saibu Gas supplied liquefied natural gas (LNG) to small cargo ships in the Port of Kitakyushu as part of an experiment to introduce more environmentally friendly fuels to the industry. This was the first trial of its kind to take place in Kyushu. LNG looks set to become a key source of fuel for the next generation of ships and sea crafts. Compared to heavy oil, which is generally used as marine fuel, LNG has lower carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions than heavy oil and does not contain sulfur. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) plans to tighten regulations on the emission of sulfur from ship in 2020. There are currently only two LNG fueled vessels in Japan, but Kyuden and other companies are already looking to move into the supply chain. Source: Nikkei Shimbun, 5/15/2019
