Kyushu University Engineer Assumed to Have Been Arrested in Ecuador

An engineer of Kyushu University is thought to have been arrested in Ecuador for attempting to export insect specimens illegally. The Ecuador Ministry of Environment announced on Mar. 15 that a Japanese man was arrested at Mariscal Sucre International Airport in Quito on Mar. 12. Later on Mar. 20, Kyushu University revealed the possibility that he might be one of their engineers. The 20-year-old was taking two weeks off this month to travel in South America. The university says that according to the Japanese Embassy in Ecuador, the man has already been released. Source: Asahi Shimbun, 3/21/2019
