Kyushu University to Offer New Scholarship

Kyushu University announced on July 26 plans to introduce a new scholarship that will determine if a student can receive financial compensation before they enroll at the university. The university hopes the initiative will encourage more students to take the entrance exam. The new system will be introduced at the beginning the next financial year. The ¥30,000 monthly scholarship will be awarded to approximately 10 students each year. Household income and school grades will be taken into consideration during the application process, which will open on September 3 this year. If the candidate fails the entrance examination, the scholarship will be awarded to another candidate. The scholarship has in part been funded by a donation made by a former company owner based in Fukuoka City who could not enter university as a youngster for financial reasons. The individual’s spirit is said to have inspired the university to create this system. Source: Nikkei Shimbun, 7/26/2018
